Have the gods Become Our God?

by

There is a fascination with gods today, even among those who call themselves Christian. However, these gods are not the gods of the Old Testament or even those of a world religion such as Hinduism. These gods are much more subtle and even less recognizable. They are the gods we create in the place of God in order to fit our situation or circumstances. They are so adept at hiding their true identity that we may view them as God Himself.

To be precise, there are many gods trying to pose as God. While they may be invisible and untouchable, they are influential and spiritual in nature. If people receive them as God, they will follow them as their God. If these gods are received as if they really are God, who will rise up to challenge them, much less refute them? These gods come into our lives for one express reason which is to steal our spiritual freedom and bring us under their bondage.

How does someone accept and receive such a god, thinking they are promoting and propagating God? The answer is found in II Corinthians 10:4-5, For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. In short, these gods are high things exalting themselves against the knowledge of God. If we follow these gods, all the while thinking we are following God, our apparent relationship with Him will become distorted, twisted and corrupt.

When we become convinced our gods are the God, we will share them with other people. If other people receive these gods, then they will have a corrupt image of God. Finally, these corrupt images are passed down through the generations.

Jesus was crucified because of people who had a corrupt image of God. When the Truth (Jesus) entered into their world, they rejected Him because He was contrary to their image of God. Therefore, how could Jesus possibly be the long awaited Messiah?

A god whom we perceive to be God is powerless to prevail against evil, much less save a life. All that a god can do is spread disillusionment, discouragement, and despair. It is time we stop creating a god who fits into our world and to start adjusting our world to a God who is not only the Creator of all that is, but is the Sustainer of the universe throughout all time.

John 8:32 speaks of truth that sets us free. Unfortunately, too many people are anything but free. They are living in a god-inspired-man-made religious prison. Some people have been living in such a prison for so long they don’t even realize they are living in bondage. It is time to recognize and resist these gods, to stand up for the freedom Christ provided, to live in His full acceptance based upon His finished work  and to start living free of the influence of the gods who project themselves to be God. It is time to cast down every vain idol and lofty opinion that seeks to distort the face of God.

Only then will we come to know God for who He is, as He is!

Yours on the continuing journey,

Mitch Odom
